Municipal and public works fleets

Automatic reverse braking for city fleets.

When a city truck backs into a pedestrian, it is a safety failure, a legal case and a headline. Search Eye is the system New York and Toronto chose to put on their trucks.

The problem

City trucks work where people live.

Sanitation, public works and parks trucks reverse on residential streets, in school zones and in busy downtown alleys. The people behind them are residents, cyclists and city workers.

  • Public accountability

One incident with a pedestrian or cyclist becomes a public, legal and political issue for the city.

  • Vision Zero goals

Cities committed to eliminating traffic deaths need fleet measures that do not depend on perfect driving.

  • Large, mixed fleets

Sanitation, public works, water and parks trucks, often of different ages and makes.

  • Procurement standards

A spec that can be written into tenders and applied to new and existing trucks alike.

Why cameras alone are not enough

Vision Zero programs push cities to remove the human variable from fleet safety. Cameras and alarms still rely on the driver. Automatic reverse braking does not.

Active vs. passive safety

How Search Eye works

One system. Five ways it has your back.

Search Eye works the moment the truck goes into reverse. No buttons to press, no screens to watch.

Rear detection zone

Three or four infrared sensors watch the space behind the truck every time it reverses. People, poles, cars and bins all register, day or night.

In-cab alerts

A green light confirms the system is on. When something is detected, a yellow light and a tone tell the driver right away.

Automatic air braking

The system applies the truck’s own air brakes. It does not wait for the driver to see, think and react. The truck simply stops.

Driver override, with a safety net

Backing up to a dock or a container on purpose? Press Auto Brake OFF. A red light and pulsing tone stay on, and the sensors keep warning.

Built for job sites too

Dump, mixer, paving and tack trucks get the same protection for the crew working behind them. Any truck with air brakes.

Why Global

A proven standard for public fleets.

Fits these trucks and any other commercial vehicle with air brakes.

FAQ

Municipalities: common questions

Still have a question? Call (905) 507-0007 or send us a note.

Which cities use Global automatic reverse braking?

The City of New York and the City of Toronto have mandated Global systems on their trucks. Global also works with municipal fleets across the U.S. and Canada.

Can we write automatic reverse braking into a truck tender?

Yes. Search Eye can be specified for new trucks and installed by the body builder, or retrofitted to existing trucks. We can share specification language on request.

Does it support Vision Zero programs?

Automatic reverse braking addresses backing collisions, one of the most common fleet incidents, without depending on driver reaction time. That fits the Vision Zero approach of designing out human error.

Is there a subscription or annual fee?

Not for Search Eye. It is a one-time purchase with a two-year warranty, which keeps multi-year budgets simple.
